12 July 2002

EBSCO Online® Replaced by EBSCOhost® Electronic Journals Service Effective
immediately, the new EBSCOhost Electronic Journals Service (EJS) is now
available to all EBSCO Online Administrators. This new and dynamic system
is designed to meet the ever-expanding needs of librarians and researchers
and is offered under the EBSCOhost banner. EBSCOhost will now serve as an
access platform for both secondary and full-text databases and individual
e-journals. On 15 July 2002, EJS will replace the existing EBSCO Online
service for all customers, including end users (see “Action Required to
Continue Access” below). You may now access the Administrator site at
<http://ejournals.ebsco.com/admin>http://ejournals.ebsco.com/admin and the
End User site at <http://ejournals.ebsco.com/>http://ejournals.ebsco.com/
using your existing EBSCO Online login information.

Like its predecessor EBSCO Online, the EBSCOhost Electronic Journals
Service provides best-in-class tools that address the increasing demands of
electronic serials management, including managing user authentication,
e-journal registration, and subscription access. As an Administrator, you
will benefit from many time-saving features that include streamlined
journal list management, automatic notifications of changes in your EJS
collection, better usage reporting, more powerful linking capabilities, and
automatic setup of journals ordered through EBSCO. For more
information, see the EJS brochure at
<http://www.ebsco.com/home/ejournals/ejsbro.pdf>http://www.ebsco.com/home/ejournals/ejsbro.pdf

Please note the following changes in the new service:
* New Site Name and URL: EBSCOhost Electronic Journals Service is a
completely new system that replaces EBSCO Online. EJS uses a different URL
from EBSCO Online (but your durable URLs will still work -- see below).
* Login Information:Your authentication setup will not change; all your IP
addresses, Usernames/Passwords, etc. that you set up on EBSCO Online have
been transferred to EJS, i.e. all users can use their existing EBSCO Online
login to access EJS.
* Admin Login: The “Admin” user name is no longer required when accessing
the Administrator site. You simply need your Customer Code and
Administrator password.
* Durable Links: All EBSCO Online durable URLs will continue to work by
automatically redirecting the user to EJS beginning 15 July 2002. On 15
July 2002, EBSCO Online will be discontinued and all EBSCO Online traffic
will be redirected to the new EJS URL. To ensure a smooth transition, we
are providing 2 weeks of advance access to EJS for
Administrators beginning today. This will allow you 2 weeks to ensure your
EJS set up is exactly the way you want it before your end users are
redirected to the new system on July 15th. During this two-week period, you
can update necessary settings in your local systems (e.g., adding new EJS
server URLs to your proxy server setup) and change your durable URLs to
point to EJS if you like (this is completely optional and is NOT required).
This will also give you time to learn the new EJS system and have your
questions answered before EJS becomes available to your end users.
Note: Once again, EBSCO Online will continue to be accessible until 15 July
2002. On that date, the EBSCOhost EJS system will replace EBSCO Online.
Until that time, users or customers going to the www.ebsco.com/online/ URL
or who link in from databases, OPACs, or other sites will continue to see
EBSCO Online. It is important that you verify your EJS setup before EBSCO
Online is discontinued to ensure a smooth transition for your end users.
All EBSCO Online mailing list (listserv) subscribers will be informed of
the new EJS system prior to July 15th.

Action Required to Continue Access

If you are using a proxy server to access EBSCO Online, it is imperative
that you add the new EJS URL to your proxy server setup to ensure that your
users can access EJS. Be assured that your EBSCO regional office is
prepared to assist you in setting up access to EJS via a proxy server. If
the EJS URL is not added to your proxy's approved sites list, your users
may not be able to access the new EJS system when EBSCO Online is
discontinued (even if the durable URLs for electronic journals loaded into
your OPAC or other systems do not change).

EJS Service Options

In addition to changing the name and URL, EJS will offer two new service
options -- Basic and Enhanced:
* The Basic version of EJS is provided at no additional charge to EBSCO
Subscription Services customers. This version includes many features that
benefit both end users and librarians, such as a simple interface that
allows for quick and easy cross-publisher searching and subject browsing,
plus simple administrative tools. However, EJS Basic offers access only to
those e-journals purchased through EBSCO.
* The Enhanced version of EJS (a fee-based service) provides a
comprehensive, world-class solution for e-journal management and access in
your library. Established EBSCO Online customers may access the Enhanced
version of EJS for a free six-month trial period beginning 1 July 2002. New
customers and those who never had an EBSCO Online account will be offered a
30-day trial of EJS Enhanced.
Note: By the end of the 6-month trial of EJS Enhanced, all customers must
order the EJS Enhanced package to continue using the service. On 31
December 2002, all customers who have not ordered the EJS Enhanced or Basic
version will no longer have access to EJS. Please contact your local EBSCO
Sales Representative or Account Service Manager by 1 December 2002 to
establish your EJS Basic or Enhanced account. Please direct all questions
concerning ordering EJS to your local EBSCO regional office.

For more information on the Basic and Enhanced versions of EJS, see the EJS
brochure at
<http://www.ebsco.com/home/ejournals/ejsbro.pdf>http://www.ebsco.com/home/ejournals/ejsbro.pdf

EBSCO Online Citations Database

The EBSCO Online Citations database, formerly provided at no charge to
EBSCOhost database customers, will be discontinued 31 July 2002. If your
patrons commonly search this database to locate citations from electronic
journals, you may want to contact your EBSCO regional office or sales
representative to learn more about a new database called TOC Premier. As an
enhanced version of the Current Citations database, TOC Premier offers
Tables of Contents and full text links for over 23,000 titles published by
the leading popular and academic publishers. TOC Premier includes TOCs
created by EBSCO Publishing‘s abstracting/indexing operations as well as
TOC records licensed from the British Library, plus TOCs from over 6,500
titles available in EJS Enhanced. TOC Premier is updated daily and contains
approximately 18 million records, with SmartLinking to full text in EJS, in
other databases, and at publisher sites, including sites of
CrossRef member publishers.

Alerts

To continue to receive alerts with EJS, each e-mail address that currently
receives alerts from EBSCO Online will receive a special e-mail message on
July 15th explaining that the user must now create a My EJS profile on EJS.
Note that the My EJS feature is only available in EJS Enhanced, i.e.
alerting is not offered in the EJS Basic service. The e-mail message will
provide a link to an EJS web page that will prompt the user to create a My
EJS password. The system will then create a My EJS profile for the user and
automatically migrate all of the user's EBSCO Online alerts over to EJS.
Even if users do not follow the link right away, they will receive the
migration instructions and a special link in the next alert e-mail they
receive.

 From EBSCO Online to EJS

Please review the following summary information that will assist you in the
transition from EBSCO Online to the new EJS site:
* New dedicated URLs for the EJS Reader (End User) and Administrator sites
are <http://ejournals.ebsco.com/>http://ejournals.ebsco.com/and
<http://ejournals.ebsco.com/admin/>http://ejournals.ebsco.com/admin/,
respectively.
* All current EBSCO Online accounts will have access to the Enhanced
version of EJS for a six-month trial period beginning 1 July and ending 31
December 2002. Your EBSCO Online setup has already been transferred to EJS,
but it is important that you verify that your setup is correct before July
15th.
* Effective 15 July 2002, EBSCO Online will be discontinued and all links
that point to EBSCO Online will be redirected to EJS. All your EBSCO Online
durable URLs will continue to work, although you may choose to update your
URLs to point to EJS if desired.
* Unlike its predecessor EBSCO Online, EJS does not allow Administrators to
switch between the Reader (End User) and Admin modes. There are now
dedicated URLs for the EJS Reader and Administrator sites (see above).
