Hello all,

We mentioned that this is maybe 2-3 months out in a faculty meeting but they pressed us on specifics.

Can someone tell me who is working on the CDL’s OA publishing agreements<https://osc.universityofcalifornia.edu/for-authors/publishing-discounts/> journal look up tool ?

I was looking through a few OSC meeting notes but wasn’t finding mention.

Do any of you know?

Since I was the owner of the old Zoom meeting, I've created a new one for us that doesn't have the waiting room requirement. The invitation is pasted in below, and if you use Outlook you can use the attached .ics file. Our passcode is 960252; if you use the long link below you shouldn't even need it.
Sadly, I was unable to designate non-UCOP co-hosts.

Hello all,

It's time for your occasional reminder that the OSC site links to various campus library websites, and those pages occasionally get stale. Will you take a look at this page and let me know what changes you'd like me to make for links on your campus?
https://osc.universityofcalifornia.edu/campus-resources/

Our CKG wiki is linked at the bottom of the page, and of course that's been broken for a while. Unless and until we have a long term replacement, I'm inclined to leave it, but let me know if you have another idea.
Best,
Katie

Hello CKG!

This list contains the greatest concentration of folks I semi-regularly hear from, so I wanted to let you know about my upcoming vacation. I'll be out of the office from 4/23 to 5/8. We're going to Scotland to visit my stepdaughter who's in university there, and I will definitely NOT be checking my email. So if something comes up next week that you want to talk to me about, send it next week rather than waiting! And if something comes up while I'm out, lean on each other. You're a knowledgeable group. 🙂

The Library is partnering with RDO by supporting users, setting up training, and helping with the renewal, Digital Science wants to raise the annual price pretty substantially, so I'm interested in finding out if there's any leverage we can get through a Tier 2 subscription.

Hello SCCKG wisdom. Do you have any guidelines for UC researchers who are entering into an editing agreement for a book? I've had a couple of people ask if the contract they've been asked to sign looks ok or if they're allowed to sign it. Since it's not about their writing but rather their work editing other authors' work, it's a different kind of contract. I haven't seen a model or ideal contract in this area so I'm wondering if there are red flags to look out for or things that we should encourage them to modify.

CAUTION: EXTERNAL EMAIL

Hello CKG,

A recent OSC working group was tasked with answering the question "what kind of self-service help can we provide for authors with long publication lists (usually emeriti) who come to us looking for guidance about getting all their old stuff on eScholarship?" My fellow group members and I eventually came up with a guide that's been living, quietly, on the OSC site for a few months now:
Collect and share your publications<https://osc.universityofcalifornia.edu/for-authors/collect-and-share-your-publications/>

In email from a faculty, they asked if the library could ensure perpetual access to the back catalog of Design Studies a premier journal in the field The journal is looking for a new home because of mismanagement by Elsevier,.

The entire editorial board has resigned, the Design Research Society, which founded and sponsors the journal, has severed ties, and it looks like many authors are withdrawing papers in the pipeline.

FYI, it's related to our occasional discussion on impacts of transformative
agreements on library workers on the ground. It seems that—unlike our
situation at UC—the Swedish librarians have a fairly hands-on role in
verifying authors and approving articles to be covered by their
transformative agreements. There is some overlap in tasks, particularly
around author education and helping answer questions about TAs.

Hi all,

Our Special Collections department is digitizing older dissertation/theses to make them available open access on HathiTrust. They ask the authors for permission to do so.

Most authors agree apparently (many are flattered that “my dissertation from 1982 is of interest!” 😊). But in some disciplines there are dissertations that include author’s previously published articles in scholarly journals. And these authors ask me about the copyright situation since the copyright, especially in the old pre-OA days, was transferred to the publisher. The authors don’t want to contact the publisher to ask for permission to make the work OA and

Good morning,

At Irvine the library works with Graduate Division on the review and author submission of Ph.D. and Masters theses/dissertations to ProQuest as part of the Policy on Open Access for Theses and Dissertations.

A question came out during discussions about workflow about print submissions. The figures I have are a few years old but in ten years of data I have for our campus OA dissertation policies prior to 2020 there were only 5 or 6 printed dissertations submitted to Special Collections for cataloging. As a result of the small numbers, Irvine is looking to remove the option

In 2015, Google introduced new candidate lists to include volumes beyond

All,

Do you already have a shared folder of author agreements, kindly forwarded

Yes, all journals within a given publisher might theoretically have
different agreements, and yes we can't keep something like that current
because publishers update them all the time -- I don't care about any of
that. I just want at least something that we could consult (in a shared

Hi all,

In the last SCCKG meeting I mentioned a suggestion from OSC regarding a designated space to collect instructional/informational material that SCCKG members have created for reuse by our group.

The idea is to upload PPTs, videos, brochures, etc. that are currently shared by email or on our wiki pages to a platform like Google Drive or Zenodo, where the material can be broadly organized and then viewed or downloaded. SCCKG members can get inspiration or borrow a graph or reuse the perfect slide for their own material.

Hello from San Diego!

Next month is the SC CKG deep dive on eScholarship publishing and in advance of that meeting we’d like to get some input from you.

The goal of this 5-question survey is to better understand the scope of publishing activities across the UC library system’s scholarly communication programs. Hi all,

This ARL panel seems to be of interest for anyone dealing with the new NIH Data Management & Sharing Policy.
https://www.arl.org/event/gearing-up-for-january-2023-institutional-strategies-for-implementing-the-nih-data-management-sharing-policy-free-september-30-webinar-invitation-only/

Though it says “Invitation only” I had no problems to register for free as a guest.

Hello, colleagues. Do any of you have at your fingertips some references to
leading or recent papers confirming positive effects (either via more
citations or greater "impact" however that is measured) for publishing OA?

I assure you: I'm not a lazy person. I'm just an exhausted person who would
appreciate it if one of her colleagues happened to have a few of these
within arm's reach.

Last year we hosted a joint meeting with the Research Data Services CKG

Hi all. When it comes to author rights under the UC OA policies, I frequently relay that authors have the right to deposit their final accepted manuscripts immediately upon publication, without an embargo period. This is often contradicted by author publication agreements, which state that this version may be made available on a website or in the IR after a 12-month or some other embargo period. So I'll refer the author to the OSC FAQ <https://osc.universityofcalifornia.edu/for-authors/open-access-policy/policy-faq/#:~:text=My%20publisher%E2%80%99s%20policy%20says%20_____________%2C%20which%20is%20different%20from%20UC%E2%80%99s%20OA%20policies.> that explains this discrepancy.

She needs to provide a guidance document for the team she's working with through a multi-institutional, government-funded project, but plans to publish on this work later on. Hello all!

I've taken what I could find in the September CKG minutes and put together
a blog post about OA week events. Please review it, add what's missing, and
fix it up.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1sHdFuFA-0v9GaeDXgFiyMTdbh147Uz8r7ePBHwPA83k/edit#

I'd love to get it posted next Monday or Tuesday, which means getting your
edits in by EOB this Friday, but let me know if that timing is a problem
for you.

Colleagues,

All members of CoUL signed on to the attached letter regarding a notice of
proposed rulemaking under the CASE Act that could directly impact
libraries. I believe UCLA will also be submitting a separate letter
individually.

Tim and I are happy to chat more if you have any questions about the
attached. Thanks to Katie, too, for reviewing.

Hello everyone, I wanted to share the news below regarding our newly appointed Open Access Publisher Agreements Manager, Mark Clemente, who will start 9/27. In his new role, Mark will be a member of TAIG and will work with the campus transformative agreement liaisons.

I also want to thank Michael Ladisch for taking up many key components of this role when I stepped out of it in July, and for his generous and outstanding contributions supporting our staff and authors in relation to our transformative agreements over the last few months. THANK YOU MICHAEL!

All,

Just wanted to pass along our comment letter from yesterday regarding the
revised draft of the UC Research Data Policy. And I checked my e-mail and
can't find the first round of comments that I know Tim sent to you for the
original draft policy (our letter from April), so I'm also reattaching
that, too, just in case.

Hi all:

We've gotten two emails in the last few weeks from Berkeley authors
publishing in IOP open access journals. Both of the authors seemed to have
no idea that they were supposed to pay an APC to publish open access in the
journals.

They essentially said that the journal accepted their article, and then the
article was published. The authors then received an invoice to pay the APC
seemingly out of the blue.

Hi,

Has anyone else encountered this scenario?

UC Merced academic personnel contacted the library after they received an RFI from the United Auto Workers regarding post-doc bargaining. The RFI included the following:

Provide all UC policies relating to open access publishing fees and subsidies available to Postdocs to cover said fees, and a list of all Postdoctoral Scholars since 2016 who have received a subsidy to cover open access publishing fees, and the date and amount of the subsidy.
