The end of 2020 and the beginning of 2021 have been a busy and productive period for WEST. WEST welcomes new members to its governance groups, hosted its winter members meeting, and helped usher in significant expansions in shared print in North America. Additionally, WEST continues to work with OCLC to finalize guidance to Archive Holders and Builders on shared print registration, and will be presenting on the options that are available to institutions as they migrate their workflows into this new service.

⮚ WEST Executive Committee Election Results and OCC Appointment: WEST carried out elections for the Executive Committee between November 24, 2020 and December 21, 2020, and is pleased to report that a quorum of 51% of the votes was surpassed in favor of the new and renewed candidates for 2021. Congratulations to our new and renewed Executive Committee members: Dena Hutto (Reed College), Michael Levine Clark (University of Denver), Denise Stephens (Washington University in St. Louis), and Kathleen Salomon (Getty Research Institute)! Additionally, Kerri Goergen-Doll (Oregon State University) was appointed by the Executive Committee to the Operations and Collections Council. ⮚ WEST Members Meeting January 2021: WEST held its winter 2021 members meeting on January 28, where attendees heard program updates and participated in a discussion about local discovery of WEST collections. Read on<https://cdlib.org/cdlinfo/2021/02/05/notes-from-wests-january-2021-members-meeting/> for an in-depth overview of the meeting and for links to the presentation records, slide deck, and the local discovery discussion document.
⮚ CDL/CRL/HathiTrust Collaboration Quick Win Project Launch: The CDL, CRL, & HathiTrust Shared Print Collaboration recently completed its first ‘quick win’ project, culminating in the launch of a new collection comparison tool that allows users to compare their local serials holdings again the PAPR database of retained titles. Read on<https://cdlib.org/cdlinfo/2021/02/05/cdl-crl-hathitrust-shared-print-collaboration-collection-comparison-tool-release-2/> for more information about the Collaboration and how to access and use the new tool.
⮚ CRL joins the Rosemont Shared Print Alliance: As a founding member of the Rosemont Shared Print Alliance in 2015, WEST is pleased to share that the Rosemont Alliance Executive Committee has accepted the Center for Research Libraries’ (CRL) application to join the Rosemont Alliance as the newest partner program. Read on<https://cdlib.org/cdlinfo/2021/02/04/crl-joins-the-rosemont-shared-print-alliance-and-partnership-for-shared-book-collections/> for more information about what CRL brings to the Alliance and the continued expansion of shared print in North America.
⮚ WEST will migrate away from the OCLC shared print second symbol: At the beginning of 2020, the WEST Disclosure & Validation Standards and Resource Sharing working groups were charged, their first task being to investigate the ongoing effectiveness of the OCLC shared print second symbol and submit a joint recommendation to the WEST OCC for unified WEST action regarding the second symbol in light of OCLC’s new registration service that negates the need for the second symbol. The OCC and WEST Executive Committee endorsed the groups’ recommendation to migrate retained holdings off of the archivers’ second symbols and onto their primary OCLC symbols. Read on<https://cdlib.org/cdlinfo/2021/01/25/west-will-migrate-away-from-using-the-oclc-shared-print-second-symbol/> for more information about this change, including benefits and next steps for the program and for members.
⮚ JRNL Updates - New Gap Statement Enhancement: The Journal Retention and Needs Listing (JRNL) program recently unveiled enhancements that change how gaps are managed by the system. JRNL now supports the use of gap statements rather than requiring that each missing volume be listed and responded to individually. Now contributors can easily review and respond to needs, and can either partially or fully fill gaps in the retained holdings. Read on<https://cdlib.org/cdlinfo/2021/02/02/jrnl-updates-new-gap-statement-enhancement/> for more information about how this change benefits archivers and contributors alike.
⮚ Upcoming shared print events: A number of shared print webinars are scheduled for the coming months, including a two-part webinar series sponsored by the Rosemont Shared Print Alliance and the Partnership for Shared Book Collections on using OCLC’s new shared print registration service. Read on<https://cdlib.org/cdlinfo/2021/01/20/save-the-dates-upcoming-shared-print-meetings-and-webinars/> for descriptions of the webinars and links to register.
All the best,
The WEST Project Team
