Hi, Anneliese. There's copyright (which would be fair use) but then contracts and policy (IRB) which would be: What did the study participants sign and agree to when participating in the study? If they consented to being interviewed and having that support multiple studies / papers, etc. (which hopefully IRB would have insisted on), then there's no problem. As always, I'm sorry that my written responses are short and I'm happy to speak more by phone.

Best,
Rachael

Hello copyright experts. A UCSF author who worked as a PI on a state-funded project would like to re-use quotes from study participants that were included in practice papers based on the project. The authors are preparing a journal article based on the research project, and would like to include some of the quotes. What are the norms and limitations with reusing quotes for this purpose?

Thanks in advance,
Anneliese
