FORCE2022
Call for Proposals

Thinking/Acting: The Global and the Local

The organizing committee for the FORCE2022 conference happening online on Dec 6-8, 2022 now invites the submission of proposals for presentations, lightning talks, posters, demos, panels, and workshops on the theme of “Thinking/Acting: The Global and the Local”. The deadline for submissions is October 20, 2022.

The FORCE11 annual conference brings together a wide variety of stakeholders in the scholarly communication ecosystem for open discussions, on an even playing field, about collaboration and cross-training that will move the needle on how scholarly and scientific information is communicated, shared and used. Researchers, publishers, librarians, computer scientists, informaticians, funders, educators, students, citizens, and others attend the FORCE11 meeting with a view to supporting the realization of promising new ideas and identifying new potential collaborators.

Thinking/Acting: The Global and the Local

The tensions between local ways of knowing and globally-imposed standards, between local academic citizenship and global systems of knowledge production, evaluation, and dissemination is ripe for scholarly investigation. Increasingly, we need to consider the larger implications of operating in our particular contexts (local, consortial, institutional, and national), while reflecting on the interconnection and interdependence of local contexts in global networks. In addition, the COVID-19 pandemic imposed some serious challenges on both the global and the local scholarly communications’ scales leading to some substantial changes in the ways of which the two affect and interact with one another. In the interest of learning from each other—whether we are neighbors or far-flung colleagues—the FORCE2022 organizing committee invites proposals for presentations, talks, panels, posters, and facilitated discussions that reflect on the idea of thinking globally and acting locally (or vice versa) in research communication. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Translating international efforts into local-scale efforts
  • Learning from local-scale collaborations
  • (In)equity in the research ecosystem
  • Local needs vs. global interests
  • Local and global systems and infrastructure
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion in scholarly communication
  • Local systems of knowing and knowledge-making as levers of global change
  • Lessons learned during the COVID-19 pandemic that helped amplify the global effects of local actions.
  • Post-pandemic shift of scholarly communications events to in-person events and their implications on the local scales (threats, opportunities, and solutions)
  • “Glocalization” - research communication as both increasingly particular and universal
  • Inherent bias in artificial (and human) intelligence systems and their effects on local, minority and marginal populations
  • Roadblocks to bridging the gap between local and global communication in research and scholarship
  • Global actions that affect local thinking and local actions that affect global thinking

The organizing committee will consider proposals for:

  • Lightning talks (maximum 10 minutes)
  • Individual presentations (maximum 20 minutes)
  • Panel discussions and roundtables (up to 60 minutes)
  • Pre-conference workshops (full or half day) -- workshops will take place prior to the dates of the conference (Dec 6-8, 2022)
  • Posters (oral poster presentations with maximum five minutes)

Strong preference will be given to panel sessions and roundtables that feature a diversity of perspectives and positionalities.

In the spirit of inclusiveness and to give space to all voices, FORCE2022 will offer scholarships to help individuals with limited funding attend the conference. Applications for scholarships shall be received during the conference registration window. The organizing committee may also invite the submission of informal roundtable sessions and facilitate an unconference time during the event. FORCE2022 invites other organizations to co-locate their own events with this conference. For more information, please contact us at [log in to unmask]

To submit a proposal, complete this Proposal Submission Form no later than October 20, 2022.
